Come for a walking tour of Abkhazi Garden, a famous heritage garden, that will be in peak rhododendron bloom in May. The landscape and building designs will be showcased, as well as how the garden is evolving as features for climate change are integrated.
Abkhazi Garden is a superb example of artistic integration of house and garden. The Summerhouse and House were designed by modernist, John Wade. The bungalow-style house built in 1947 easily sits on the terrace, perfectly sited for magnificent view of the garden and vistas beyond. Retired architect, Terrance William, who worked with John Wade, will be present to talk about the architectural design of the garden.
The head gardener, Jacqui Paulson, will showcase the landscape design of the heritage garden and adaptations for climate change starting with the new walkway. Prince Nicolas and Princess Peggy, who created the garden, embraced the natural features of Garry Oaks and glaciated rock and planted rhododendrons throughout the garden.
To fully appreciate this beautiful garden and its design, attendees will also learn the love story of Prince Nicolas and Princess Abkhazi!
1pm and 2.30pm tours are available.
